Walks
We’ve put together a small selection of some of our favourite walks, including where to stop for nice lunch. Most walks are around 2hours, dependent on experience (and how often you stop to admire the view!). The ones we’ve listed as further afield may require travel from Settle before starting the walk. The list of recommendations is by no means exhaustive and there are maps provided in the cottage for you to plan more routes – we’d love to hear from you of your favourites and we can add to the list.
Local
Great as a walk on its own or combined with Hofman Kiln, a walk along the River Ribble to Knight Stainforth.
Cross Packhorse Bridge and marvel at Stainforth Force and enjoy a drink and some food at Knight’s Table by Knight Stainforth Hall.
A hidden gem, the Hoffman Kiln at Langcliffe is definitely worth a visit. Part of the now retired Craven Lime Works, don’t forget a torch so you can walk around inside.
From there, continue onto Stainforth and walk across the Stepping Stones of Stainforth Beck and take a look at Catrigg Force Waterfall.
You may notice the distinctive copper dome that is viewable from so many locations in Settle. The chapel to the 600 year old school in Giggleswick, interior visits can be arranged with the school, but its just as impressive from the outside.
Couple your walk with the caves of Giggleswick Scar to explore this village to its fullest.
There are several routes to Feizer and Austwick, and Elaine’s Tea Rooms is a perfect stopping point for a quick bite. Our preferred starts from Stackhouse Lane.
On the way back you can cross the River Ribble, before turning up the ‘Highway’ and dropping down in Settle Market Square.
Further Afield
The Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent are all wonderful walks.
On a clear day Morcambe Bay and the Lake District can be seen from Ingleborough, amazing views not to be missed.
Experience first hand the limestone rocks that make the Yorkshire Dales so special, Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are ‘must visit’ places when staying at Cobweb Cottage.
Nearby there are places to stop for a bite to eat, including the Lister Arms and The Secret Garden Bistro.
Easy to get to either by parking in the Community Centre car park (use your weekly ticket from Ashfield car park) or take the bus from the Market Square.
Follow the trail along the rivers Twiss and Doe, a particular favourite of Christine’s as it passes the farm where she grew up as a child.
Experience the longest show cave in the UK, with underground waterfalls and streams.
Also located in Ingleton, its a perfect accompaniment to the waterfall trail (and great fun for the kids!).
